Onions, garlic, chives, leeks, and shallots contain compounds called disulfides and thiosulfates that can damage red blood cells and cause hemolytic anemia in cats. Garlic is actually more concentrated and therefore more toxic than onions. These foods are dangerous in all forms - raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated.

- Hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells)
- Lethargy and weakness
- Pale gums
- Rapid breathing
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Collapse in severe cases

Never feed your cat any form of onions or garlic. Be careful with baby foods, broths, and other prepared foods that may contain onion or garlic powder as ingredients. If your cat consumes any amount, contact your veterinarian immediately.
